To develop immersive learning and innovative environments, state-of-art in interdisciplinary research and creativity in the domain of Humanities and Social Sciences that include Professional Communication in English, Personality Development, Managerial skills, Life Skills through Yoga and Value Education.
GOALS:
To be part of leading scientific and technological advancements and capabilities to gain a deep understanding of the world’s cultural, social and literary complexities for sustainable development.
To generate path-breaking ideas on social ethos, pathos and logos to make our civilisation and culture sustainable through graduate and postgraduate teaching and research programmes.
The Department of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS), NIT Raipur was established in the year 1958 (formerly, the Department of English under the Government College of Engineering and Technology). The Department of HSS is presently one of the emerging departments, which is home to research and teaching in the field of sociology, psychology, value education, English literature, theatre, music, yoga and linguistics. The department largely helps to develop verbal and non-verbal communication skills, understand the values in education, explore modern Indian and British English literature, and conceptualise neurocognitive aspects of language, music and emotion. Moreover, it empowers citizens; graduate and undergraduate students across inArts, Technological and Engineering backgrounds with a high range of innovative and critical thinking skills that are needed to enrich the meaning and wisdom of human life.
Human values including ethical, moral and social principles, human rights and cosmic laws are reflected to be part of all types of engineering and scientific developments. Engineers often involve in the application of environmental and bioethics principles to respect Mother nature, while applying the abstract knowledge of mathematics and developing all types of mechanical and material infrastructures. In this regard, the Department of HSS offers the following courses on Humanities and Social Sciences: (1) Communication Skills Theory (CBCS scheme), (2) Communication Skills Lab (CBCS scheme), (3) Value Education (CBCS scheme), (4) Yoga and Health Hygiene (CBCS scheme), (5) Managerial Skills (NIT scheme) and (6) Innovation and Entrepreneurial Skills (NIT Scheme). In addition, the Department has been contributing to humanity at large through interdisciplinary PhD programs and outputs in the area of following specializations: American English Literature, Diaspora Studies and Comparative Literature; British English Literature, Linguistics: Phonetics & Phonology (Optimality Theory), Sociolinguistics, Psycholinguistics, Neurolinguistics, Cognitive Neuroscience; Regional Literature, Translation Studies, Indian Writing in English; Children's Rights, Human Rights, Sociology of Social Change; English Language Teaching (ELT), Consciousness Development Based Value Education; Yogic Science and Holistic Health. Overall, the Department also encourages graduate and postgraduate students to engage in co-curricular activities including poster presentation, group and panel discussions and mock interviews that are essentials for the development of leadership, nurturing of team spirit and organizational skills.
