DEFINITION:Biomedical Engineering integrates physical, chemical, mathematical, and computational sciences and engineering principles to study biology, medicine, behavior and health. It advances fundamental concepts, creates knowledge from the molecular to the organ systems levels, and develops innovative biology, materials, processes, implants, devices, and informatics approaches for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disease, for patient rehabilitation, and for improving health.
CONCEPTS: Students are familiarized with introductory concepts in bioinstrumentation, biomechanics and biomaterials. Bioinstrumentation is the application of instrumentation techniques and principles for the measurement of physical, physiological, & biological factors in humans and other living organisms. It brings together many traditional disciplines including biology, optics, mechanics, mathematics, electronics and chemistry. Biomechanics is the application of force/displacement and motion analysis to problems encountered in working with biological systems, especially the human body. It involves such things as mechanical analysis of fracture fixation devices, finite element analysis of hard & soft body tissue, blood & air flow analysis, and motion analysis of sports activities. The biomaterials field involves the development, selection, modification and evaluation materials to be used for implantation in living organisms.
